I need help seeking new movies?
I want to discover some new movies, preferrably funny ones.
Now, I don’t want to see anything put out by mainstream Hollywood.
I want something independent, and awkwardly funny.
I want to see something that has the awkward humor like Eagle Vs. Shark, Me and You and Everyone We Know, or A Complete History of my Sexual Failures.
I want to discover some more movies along that line.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the ones filled with sad drama like Lars Von Trier films such as Dancer in the Dark and Breaking the Waves (talk about some weepy-eyed movies!), I just want to watch something lighter.
I’ll also go for some nice dark comedies too (like Death At A Funeral, Wristcutters, Fear and Loathing, and anything by Todd Solondtz).
Just please, I beg you, don’t reply with some list of movies that Hollywood just put out to please the masses. I don’t have time for it. I want to actually LAUGH and not stare at my wristwatch the entire time.
And, Twilight does NOT fit this criteria.
Aside from that, what are your suggestions?
I’ve already watched Donnie Darko and Slumdog. Loved them both.
I have 2 movies that I think you might like.
One is In Bruges starring Colin Farrell. This is definitely a dark comedy that is filled with some truly classic quotes that you will love to use. To describe it a little without spoiling it, it is about a man who becomes a hitman and on his first job which is to kill a priest accidentally shoots a little boy in the process. The rest of the movie is filled with how this effects his life and the others around him. I know you will like this if you are in to dark comedies. It doesn’t sound like it would be funny, but there are some truly hilarious parts. Watch it.
Also, I’m not as sure if you would like this one, but the movie the Darwin Awards starring Winona Ryder in it is definitely not main-stream comedy, but has some hilarious parts in it. If you don’t know what the Darwin Awards are, they are a reference to natural selection that people "win" when they kill themselves in really stupid ways.
I hope you enjoy these, if I think of anymore than I will edit them in later.

Danny Darko’s a pretty good one. It’s dark (haha) but it has some randomly funny moments.

don’t know if its indie enough, but ‘dead man’ with johnny depp is dark comedy. good acting, good dialogue (what there is of it). neil young did the soundtrack and was one of the guys on the train shooting buffalo. so many cameo appearances by musicians/actors, its great

Look, opinions differ highly from person to person. So putting that out there I would suggest you just start renting new releases, but only the stuff on ‘limited’ release. For example, look at last year’s Oscar nominees for best picture: Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Milk…..etc. they are all limited releases. Usually these are the best type of movies, but every now and then something mainstream rocks (Dark Knight for example)…..hope that helps.

Well
I, personally, love indie films…but recently I’ve been watching some older ones (Black & White films), with Cary Grant in them.
He is hilarious, in a screwball kind of way.
Movies:
-The Darjeeling Limited (great performance by Adrien Brody)
-Bottle Rocket (Owen Wilson’s debut [not similar to most of his newer stuff])
-Arsenic and Old Lace
-Bringing Up Baby
-American Psycho (Horror/Dark Comedy)
-A Room With A View (
-There Will Be Blood (one parts funny/overall marvellous movie)
-Little Miss Sunshine (great one, but you’ve probably seen it. If so, Watch it again!)
-The Pianist
-3:10 to Yuma
-Clockwork Orange (disturbing/awkwardly hilarious)
-Burn After Reading
etc.etc.
hopefully you enjoy them
may the force be with you
