Why are Republicans always damning health care reform as "socialism", when America has long had socialism?
Listening to the Republicans, one might think that the US is going to collapse into the sea if everyone has a chance to have health insurance. Yet America has long had socialized programs, and as far as I can tell, there is no collapse of our nation:
-We have had Social Security for seniors since 1935.
-We have had numerous social safety nets, such as Aid to Families With Dependent Children and unemployment insurance.
-We have medicare for seniors, a form of socialized health care insurance.
-We have medicaid for the poor. Same idea, for the poor.
-We have billions of dollars in farm subsidies, to guarantee good prices and revenue for farmers.
-We have numerous programs for college students, small business owners, and minority individuals.
-We have the U.S. military, the most enormous form of government-funded program that employs millions and funds billions of dollars in the defense sector. When you strip this down of the patriotic mumbo jumbo that Republicans always tout, it is really nothing but what Eisenhower called the "military industrial complex". In Europe this form of socialism is called corporatism. In Hannity’s/Fox News’ world, it is called "patriotism".
-Iraq and Afghanistan are the biggest discretionary public spending programs we currently have. You can call it whatever you like, it’s a publicly funded program. If you really think that these wars are "defending the homeland", then I have a bridge in Alaska to sell you. A bridge to nowhere.
-The Government has on many occasions bailed out corporate scalawags, including during the S&L crisis, and the recent financial sector banking crisis.
People, wake up! America has LONG had socialism. But even with that, this country has yet to collapse into the damn sea. If anything, universal health care is more relevant than ALL of the above programs, which Republicans today for the most part accept. Healthy Americans are PRODUCTIVE Americans. That is, THEY MAKE MORE MONEY. More money than retirees or soldiers who throw bombs into caves.
Give people health care and shut your traps already about "the end of America"!
We have not had full blown socialism / communism which is what they want..
Never has the feds controlled ALL of our health care.
Never has the feds controlled the banks
Never has the feds controlled the auto makers.
Never have we had a federal mandatory youth core as Obama proposes.
The states & not the feds have run the schools & I know that there are federal programs, but they didn’t control the school system.
